Our Story
Rooted in Hawaiʻi. Created with Purpose.
Phases Hawaii was born from a love for the place we call home and a belief that the art and creativity inspired by Hawaiʻi deserve to be valued, supported, and preserved.
A Love for Hawaiʻi That Spans Generations
My great-grandfather, Tai Sing Loo, was born in Honolulu in 1886 and became an official U.S. Navy photographer at Pearl Harbor. Throughout his life, he captured the Hawaiʻi he loved through his lens—its people, landscapes, historic moments, and everyday life.
His photographs have become part of Hawaiʻi’s visual history. From iconic images of Duke Kahanamoku to old Waikīkī, Pearl Harbor, Hawaiʻi’s volcanoes, and island life, his work preserved moments of Hawaiʻi that continue to be seen and appreciated generations later.
Today, his photographs can be found in historical collections, publications, exhibits, and displays throughout Hawaiʻi and beyond. For our family, there is something incredibly special about seeing the Hawaiʻi he knew and loved continue to live through his photographs.
After his passing, our family chose to help preserve his legacy by entrusting his photography collection to Bishop Museum, allowing his work and the moments he captured to continue being shared with future generations.
His story has always stayed with me and shaped the way I think about the people behind creative work.
Art has value. The artist matters. And the stories of Hawaiʻi deserve to be told with care.
That belief is an important part of our why at Phases Hawaii.
Why Supporting Local Matters to Us
When you see original artwork throughout a Phases Hawaii collection, there is a real artist behind it.
We are proud to collaborate with local artists, compensate them for their creativity, and pay for the right to bring their artwork to life on our products.
We choose to work with real artists because we believe creativity deserves to be valued—and so do the people behind it.
For us, supporting local isn’t just something we say. It’s something we choose to do.
It means valuing the artist behind the artwork, investing back into the community that inspires us, and creating pieces with a genuine connection to Hawaiʻi and the people who call it home.
From One Generation to the Next
Today, Phases Hawaii carries that love for Hawaiʻi forward in our own way—creating pieces inspired by nature, our island home, and everyday life while working alongside local artists and small businesses in our community.
And every time you choose Phases Hawaii, you become part of that story too.
Every piece you wear, every gift you give, and every artist collaboration you support allows us to keep creating, collaborating, and investing back into our community.
When you support Phases Hawaii, you’re not only supporting our small business. You’re helping us support the artists, makers, and community behind what we create.
From my great-grandfather preserving the Hawaiʻi he loved through his photographs to the artists we have the privilege of working with today, the medium may have changed, but the heart behind it hasn’t.
Create with purpose. Value the artist. Celebrate Hawaiʻi.
We’re grateful you’re here and hope you’ll continue to be part of the Phases Hawaii story for years to come.
Mahalo for growing with us. 🤍
